The San Diego Fleet tries to build on last week's victory as they taker on the San Antonio Commanders in the Alliance of American Football for Sunday night on NFL Network.

Did the San Diego Fleet get some of their offensive issues fixed last week? They got on the board with a victory, but we have to wonder whether head coach Mike Martz's system has really sunk in just yet. One thing that could be to their advantage is that on Sunday, they are going up against a team they have already faced before, when they take the field against the San Antonio Commanders in AAF (Alliance of American Football) betting action that gets underway at 8 PM ET on NFL Network. In the season opener, San Antonio harassed San Diego quarterback Mike Bercovici for six sacks and a pair of interceptions in the 15-6 victory. Martz declared after the game that Bercovici was not ready to go in there and implement his very complex system under actual game conditions, and Phillip Nelson, a former East Carolina quarterback who had come on in relief, would make the next start.

Nelson led San Diego to a 24-12 win over Atlanta last week, but the offense didn't necessarily move on the strength of his arm. In fact, he had mediocre numbers, as he completed 14 of 30 passes for 142 yards. The ground attack carried the day for the Fleet, as Ja'Quan Gardner and Terrell Watson combined for 153 yards. That might be their approach again, as Martz continues to integrate his passing scheme.

In any given NFL game, there could be a tremendous disparity with regard to the abilities of the two quarterbacks involved. That may be the case in the AAF too, although you do indeed have to consider that any QB's presence in the league, by definition, means that he is not ready for prime time.

There was a difference in the quarterbacks playing for San Diego, but it was not necessarily based on true ability. The original plan was the have Josh Johnson, an NFL journeyman who has posted the unfathomable figures of 43 TD's and ONE interception locally for the University of San Diego under Jim Harbaugh, be someone who could serve as a "face" of the franchise as it got rolling. But after the AAF had its "quarterback draft" in November, injuries for the Washington Redskins at the quarterback spot forced them into signing Johnson, and he is going to stay in the NFL.

When Martz assumes control of an offense, there is a lot for the quarterback to digest. And the same can be said of the receivers, who have to run more precise routes than perhaps in any other system. So it takes time for everybody to get on the same page. Nelson has an advantage over Bercovici, in that he was exposed to Martz's system when he was playing under him in a college all-star game, but he still has a ways to go.

Nelson has been bothered by a back injury, although he did manage to practice three days. San Antonio and San Diego are two of three teams in the league that have been able to register a "quarterback pressure" on more than half the opposing team's dropbacks. And the Commanders have eleven sacks. So they are going to harass whoever the Fleet uses under center. Yes, San Antonio has some variety at quarterback with Logan Woodside and Marquise Williams, but both of these teams might be counted on to run the ball

We're not sure how far to trust the Fleet, and we know that San Antonio can stack up to stop the run and dare Nelson to beat them on his own. It's a quick rematch, and in those games we are not necessarily expecting offenses to step up, when they are still at a stage where timing is a problem. So we are once again going UNDER the total in this contest.
