NCAA Football Week 14 Top 25 Picks
Updated Friday with more picks and opinions with additional game analysis, stats and information you can bet on.
Ohio State at Michigan - Opinion: Ohio State
The Game is one of the biggest rivalry games, and Ohio State has lost 4-straight in this heated rivalry, three times as a TD+ favorite including last year laying 20 points. Both teams are defensive dominators with the Buckeyes nation-best 8.4 points per game allowed. Status of Ohio State's top-2 wide receivers will be determined hours ahead of kickoff Saturday. Normally a take on the Wolverines top defense and balanced offense at this price at home, but Michigan QB Underwood gets his first taste of this huge rivalry, and the freshman will make some mistakes against Ohio State's dominant defense. Final: Ohio State wins 27-9.
Texas A&M at Texas - Opinion: Texas
See biggest rivalry games link above for more insight and analysis. The Aggies are undefeated and a win secures A&M's first perfect season since 1992, a spot in the SEC Championship Game and likely first round bye in the College Football Playoff. Texas A&M escaped two weeks ago at home as a 16+ point favorite over South Carolina 31-30 after trailing 30-3 at haltime. The Longhorns have played better over the past month, and their top defense can Hook 'em as a 'Dog with a 2 TD line adjustment from what would have been a Longhorns 10-point favorite opening week. Final: Texas wins 27-17.
Georgia Tech at Georgia - Georgia won this matchup last year 44-42 in EIGHT overtimes as a 17-point favorite. Tech defense has been shredded the last three games with the Yellow Jackets allowing 42, 34 and 48 points. Still, small opinion and lean home 'Dogs way. Final: Georgia wins 16-9.
Miami at Pittsburgh - Opinion: Miami
The Panthers let us down a few weeks ago at home in a blowout loss to Notre Dame. Pitt is 6-1 in ACC play and Miami 5-2, but the Hurricanes have the league's No. 1 scoring defense (15.6 ppg) and top-8 nationally. Final: Miami wins 38-7
Vanderbilt at Tennessee - Opinion: Tennessee and Over
First time these teams have met with both ranked in the Top 25. Vanderbilt (9-2) has also won 9 or more games for the first time ever. Vanderbilt wins 45-24.
Arizona at Arizona State - Pick: Arizona State
A Friday night Duel in the Desert. Both teams enter at 8-3 SU in their Territorial Cup rivalry with Arizona State, the defending Big 12 champion, still having a longshot chance at the Conference Championship Game. The Sun Devils would have been a 2-TD favorite at the start of the season in this matchup. Arizona enters with 4-straight wins and has over-achieved behind QB Fifita and a top-10 pass defense allowing 169 passing yards per game. But the 200 yards per game ASU ground game will lead the Sun Devils to victory with a solid defense expected to rise up and hold the Wildcats to less than 24 points for the first time in eight games. Final: Arizona wins 23-7.
Alabama at Auburn - Opinion: Alabama. See biggest rivalry games link above for more insight and analysis. Final: Alabama wins 27-20.
Ole Miss at Mississippi State - Pick: Mississippi State
Egg Bowl rivalry, and the fans in Starkville have a hard-nosed attitude towards their Hotty-Toddy Ole Miss fans. The cowbells will be ringing throughout this hated rivalry, and while Ole Miss (10-1) will secure a College Football Playoff berth with a victory, the MSU Bulldogs (5-6) will play with even more determination beyond a bowl bid for a victory in this contest that is a true rivalry at every turn.
Despite just one conference win, Mississippi State has been very competitive in high-scoring overtime losses to both Tennessee and Texas while racking up 383 and 445 yards offense. A 2-point loss at Florida also saw the Bulldogs produce nearly 470 yards offense but just 21 points. The Bulldogs defense has forced 17 turnovers and lead the SEC in interceptions. The Ole Miss offense averages 36 points per game and a Power Four-high 484 yards per game. Quarterback Trinidad Chambliss plays in his first Egg Bowl, while Bulldogs senior QB Blake Shapen’s experience and recent back-to-back 320+ yard, 9.0 yards per play passing performances provide the Bulldogs an edge. Same with the outside distractions as Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin has fueled a frenzy being pursued by LSU and Florida for their vacant head coaching positions. The Ole Miss players can say they are focused and not distracted, but that’s a smoke screen as they hear cow bells banging through their ears all game and the Bulldogs bringing their best effort of the season. Despite each of the last eight editions of this rivalry staying under the game total, this sets up to be a higher-scoring game. Final: Ole Miss wins 38-19.
Non Top 25 and Rivalry Games
Florida State at Florida - Opinion: Florida State
Florida State has 5-wins (2 in ACC) including one over Alabama, but the Seminoles have been a big underachiever despite outgaining 10 of 11 opponents by an average of nearly 160 yards per game. Florida State still need a victory in this sunshine state rivalry to become bowl eligible. The Gators (3-8) won’t be going bowling and focusing on a new head coach. The Seminoles matchup with the Gators in the trenches and have the kind of playmakers who can flip field position and create short fields. Rivalry ‘Dog call. Final: Florida wins 41-20.
Kentucky at Louisville - Opinion: Under
Kentucky is another 5-win team shooting for a bowl bid, and the Wildcats rely heavily on their run game. Louisville has 7-wins but enters on a 0-3 SU/ATS run with 2 TD's scored in their last 9 quarters and missing their starting quarterback. Kentucky and Louisville average 348 and 368 yards per game and just under 150 rushing yards per game. But both teams will struggle to reach their total yards averages as the stronger defensive fronts control the proceedings in a projected lower-scoring rivalry game. Final: Louisville wins 41-0.
Opinions on Big AAC favorites North Texas (-20.5) and South Florida (-28.5). Finals: North Texas wins 52-25. South Florida wins 52-3.
Middle Tennessee State (+3.5) at New Mexico State - Opinion: MTSU. Final MTSU wins 31-24.
Supporting stats and angles for visiting MTSU, and the NMST Aggies are losing the stats by an average of -75 net yards per game this season.
Mountain West games
UNLV at Nevada - battle for the Fremont Cannon, and visiting Rebels hold all the edges on offense as they shoot for a 10th win and outside shot at the Mountain West Championship Game. UNLV's sieve defense is also coming off an ultra-impressive 28-point win over Hawaii in which they limited the Warriors to a season-low 231 yards. Nevada enters off back-to-back wins as 'Dog to reach 3-wins this season, and a close 2-point loss at New Mexico provides hope they can hang with the Rebels. While I'm leary of laying it on the road in this rivalry matchup, it's Rebels or pass but still understanding the dynamics of rivalry home 'Dogs playing this game as their Super Bowl. Final: UNLV wins 42-17.
Wyoming at Hawaii - Pick: Hawaii (-7.5). Uptick on this line, and can't imagine Wyoming playing with much intensity after losing last week at home to lowly Nevada 13-7 and now traveling to the Island. The Cowboys honored 24 seniors and couldn't score on the doorstep in the closing seconds in honor of NFL Bills QB Josh Allen jersey retirement day as well.
Hawaii is going bowling, and the Rainbow Warriors beat MWC leader San Diego State and their league-best defense on this field 38-6 in Week 11, a winner on these pages. Wyoming has 4-wins and lost any hope of a bowl bid last week in another disappointing loss and no-show offensive performance. How dreadful is the Cowboys offense? Wyoming is the only scoring defense in the Top 25 nationally to not have at least 7 wins. The Cowboys fired their offensive coordinator last month, and promoted a completely clueless wide receivers coach to OC and calling plays. The results? 7, 3 and 7 points score last three games with only a 28-0 home win over last place Colorado State to their credit. Aloha, and join me at the sportsbook to make an ATM withdrawal. Final: Hawaii wins 27-7.
