The Detroit Lions will try to take over the NFC North lead as they tackle the Green Bay Packers in NFL action on Monday night at Lambeau Field.

The Green Bay Packers have started the season relying a little more on their defense than their offense. Will that continue? Well, last week's offensive effort against Dallas was a sign of what could be possible for Aaron Rodgers and his mates in Matt LaFleur's system, so steps forward could be imminent. Now they have to take on a determined Detroit Lions contingent on Monday Night Football, starting at 8:15 PM ET at Lambeau Field.

The Packers rolled to a 34-24 victory over the Dallas Cowboys last week. Well, "rolled" may be an exaggeration, in the respect that while they got off to an early lead, they had to stave off a violent Dallas rally to get home safely. The problem, to use that old adage, is that they did "play all four quarters." They allowed 563 yards to the Cowboys, and that's too much, as they took advantage of three Dak Prescott interceptions, including one that went through Amari Cooper's hands on the way to what might have been a touchdown.

The big contributor for Green Bay was actually running back Aaron Jones, who had a career day, with 182 yards from scrimmage and four touchdowns. He may have to have another big effort, because Rodgers will once again be missing his primary target, Davante Adams. This will likely reduce the downfield explosiveness of the air game and create an increased role for former All-Pro tight end Jimmie Graham.

The Monday Night Football odds, as they are posted with reduced juice at BetAnySports, look like this:

Green Bay Packers -3.5 (-105)
Detroit Lions +3.5 (-105)

Over 45.5 points (-105)
Under 45.5 points (-105)

Green Bay Packers MNF free playDid you know that only five teams in the NFL have run the ball more often, on a percentage basis, than these Lions? Yes, times have changed. And that is coincidental with the arrival of Matt Patricia, the former defensive coordinator in New England, who made offensive balance a high priority. Of course, that puts pressure on Kerryon Johnson, who is averaging just 3.4 yards a carry. As far as the ground game is concerned, the Lions aren't all the way there yet - indeed, they have only one rushing touchdown - but they are going to run it anyway, because they don't want opposing defenses teeing off on Matthew Stafford, who has suffered seven sacks in four games, which isn't horrible.

There is some hope of establishing the run against the Packers, who by almost any measure have been somewhat soft up front. They have allowed 5.2 yards per rush attempt, and they are third from the bottom as far as "2nd level yards" allowed, which means that they have not done a good job when opposing backs get beyond the line of scrimmage.

Detroit Green Bay Monday Night NFL pickIf Stafford gets something out of the backfield, he's got room to operate. And it was good news for Detroit that rookie tight end TJ Hockenson, who is very promising, was cleared from concussion protocol and is available. The Lions might be the team with the more complete passing game.

Patricia has expressed that he is "nervous" about facing Rodgers, but his stop unit has already faced a number of QB's who can pose problems, including Philip Rivers, Carson Wentz, Patrick Mahomes and Kyrie Murray. And they'll have the services of cornerback Darius Slay, who had to sit out against the Chiefs. At 2-1-1, they have a chance to inch themselves in front of the other NFC North teams, and they have a real opportunity to win their third game at Lambeau in the last four tries. We're taking Detroit here.
