Will the New York Giants have exhausted all "surprises" by the time the first half is over against the Philadelphia Eagles?

BetOnline customers who follow the NFL relatively closely are aware that Jason Garrett has been fired as offensive coordinator of the New York Giants. Apparently the feeling on the part of head coach Joe Judge, a young guy in his first year on the job, was that Garrett, who spent nine years as head coach of the Dallas Cowboys, was not bringing enough imagination to the table.

After all, the league is changing and evolving and you have to change with it. That, anyway, is what some of the critics said, mostly anonymously of course, after the firing.

The big gripe was that the "playmakers" the Giants have spent a lot of money on we're not getting the ball enough. Specifically, that means someone like Kenny Golladay, who has caught only 20 passes on the season. That we must point out that Golladay has sat out some games with an injury, but the sentiment is that he is the top receiving option for this club, even above that of rookie Kadarius Toney, who can be explosive at times.

Judge was actually holding off his choice as a new play-caller, because he thought it might give him some sort of "competitive advantage." Maybe that was silly, maybe it wasn't. But most people knew it was going to be Freddie Kitchens, who has at least had some experience in this role. Kitchens is the former head coach of the Cleveland Browns, although if you blinked you missed his one year on the job. In the season prior to that, however, he came in as an interim coordinator after Todd Haley was fired and did a lot of good things with the Cleveland offense. Namely, Baker Mayfield became more effective and the Browns started to develop an effective running game behind Nick Chubb.

We can assure BetOnline patrons that there will be something of a different look to the Giants this week. No one really knows for sure what that look will be, but the general consensus is that this whole thing isn't going to be transformed in a week, and a short week as that, as New York had to play at Tampa Bay on Monday night.

Whatever surprises the Giants have will be known to the Eagles soon enough, so by halftime, they will have made the necessary adjustments. Or at least in theory they would have.

Of course, if Kitchens does not make the decision to utilize Evan Engram effectively, he's wasting an opportunity. Engram is another guy who may have been mishandled, but the Eagles have allowed 81% completions and nine touchdowns to tight ends this year.

Now let's take a look at Philadelphia's side of things. Some weeks back, Nick Sirianni, another first-year coach who had previously been the offensive coordinator for Frank Reich at Indianapolis, decided that he wanted to become more physical. More to the point, he wanted to continue emphasizing Jalen Hurts and his running ability, while at the same time not putting too much of a burden on his arm.

So the Eagles took to a run-heavy attack, and they have gotten results with it. As they have won three of their last four games, climbing back into the playoff mix with a record of five I can fix, Philly has averaged 217.5 yards per game on the ground. That is nothing short of phenomenal - in fact, that is 60 yards higher than Clevealnd's league-leading average. And even the New Orleans Saints, who went into last week's game having given up only 3.1 yards per carry, were shredded. In fact, the Eagles registered 242 rushing yards, highest total of the season. Miles Sanders returned from an injury and had 94 yards, which is good news, because Jordan Howard, who came off the practice squad and was so great with his role, is on injured reserve with a knee injury.

You can't do any of this unless the offensive line is getting a huge push. And the Eagles are getting their running backs into space rather easily. The Giants' defensive line that has been pushed back quite a bit; only eight teams in the NFL have surrendered more yards per carry before contact.

So what does all of this mean, for our purposes? Well, we know that the Eagles defensive staff will have unraveled some of the mystery of what the Giants are going to do by the time the second half starts, but Philadelphia'sown approach is harder to solve. There's a pretty good chance of wearing Big Blue down after halftime. That's the way teams with dominant ground games operate.

We're not going to speculate as to whether the Eagles will have the lead, or how big a lead that will be. They are favored by 3.5 points, but we are concerned with a second-half lines here. And you can do that at BetOnline in the form of "quarter" bets.

The Eagles are favored by a half-point in both the third and fourth quarters. In the third they are getting +110, and in the fourth their price is +105. I'd recommend both wagers, because whether the game is close or not, Philadelphia can press an advantage through the ground game.
