Top Bets for This Weekend - April 24-25

A look at the action for this weekend, with betting tips and top picks for weekend NBA, NHL and Major League Baseball.

Tips and picks for weekend sports betting action.

It's just a weekend in April, but the sports schedule is full of key games in the three major sports leagues playing right now.

The Padres and Dodgers kick off a four-game set on Thursday that ends on Sunday night. The NHL offers up a Saturday doubleheader of first-place teams playing second-place teams and two games in the NBA featuring top three teams in each conference.

Here are the top bets this weekend.

HOW BETTORS ARE PREPARING FOR THE NBA PLAY-IN TOURNAMENT

NHL: Carolina @ Florida
The Panthers and Hurricanes are the top two teams in the Central Division. Carolina has owned Florida this season winning five straight over the Panthers since losing the first game between the two teams.
Saturday’s game is in Florida where the Panthers have yet to beat Carolina this season. Look for a total set at 6 and for the Hurricanes to do what they do best - defend. Carolina is fourth in average goals allowed per game (2.43) which ranks fourth in the NHL.

NHL free picksThe total has gone Under in four straight Hurricanes games. Play the Under down to 6.

NHL: Washington @ NY Islanders
Two points separate the Capitals and Islanders in the East Division. First-place Washington won the first three games they played against the Islanders this season. New York won the last two.

The Islanders are second in the NHL in average goals allowed per game (2.33). That means Saturday’s total is likely to be 5.5 once again.

With the game at New York and the Islanders having won six of their last nine, look for the home team to be favored. This is a great situation to jump on the road underdog. The Caps face the Isles on Thursday night and are +110 dogs. Look for something similar on Saturday.

NBA: Sixers @ Bucks
The Sixers and Bucks will cap off a two-game series on Saturday after playing on Thursday. The two teams have played just once so far. Milwaukee won at home 109-105 on March 17. The Bucks were a six-point favorite.

Sixers Bucks betting tipsThe Bucks have lost five of their last eight games while Philly is 4-1 in its last five. The Sixers are outstanding on defense and the return of Joel Embiid has helped. To put these teams into perspective going in the 2021 NBA Playoffs, both the 76ers and the Bucks are at +750 to win it all.

This game will come down to where the numbers are at and the status of Giannis Antetokoumpo. The Sixers (31-26) trend to the Under. The Bucks trend the other way (34-23).

In the first matchup in March, the total was 235. With Giannis in the lineup, the number is probably similar. Without him, much lower. With a number in the 230s, play the Under as Philly's defense slows down the Bucks.

NBA: Suns @ Nets
It’s a matchup of second-place teams from each conference in Brooklyn on Sunday. The Nets host Phoenix in a rematch of a Feb. 16 game. Brooklyn won 128-124 in Phoenix.

Suns Nets free pickJames Harden carried the Nets that night with 38 points. Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving did not play. On Sunday, Harden will be out and there is a possibility that Durant could be also. He was ruled out of a Tuesday night game with a thigh injury.

Phoenix has won 11 of its last 13 road games and they are 12-5 ATS in their last 17 games on the road. With both Harden and Durant out, the Suns are the favorite. If Durant plays, the Nets might be the favorite at home.

This is clearly a game the Suns can win. They’ve won 12 of their last 14.

MLB: Padres @ Dodgers
The final game of the four-game series is set for Sunday with Chris Paddack taking the mound for San Diego and Dustin May for the Dodgers. Both pitchers are 1-1 thus far.

The Dodgers continue to be without Cody Bellinger and Gavin Lux who are on the 10-day IL. That hasn't stopped the Dodgers from starting the season 13-4. That record includes two wins over San Diego last week.
Los Angeles has yet to lose a home game. The Dodgers are 6-0 at home. With each team's fifth starter on the hill, look for the offenses to take charge. Play the Over up to 8.
