The Miami Dolphins are in the process of deciding who their quarterback is going to be as they take the field against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Friday night.

The Miami Dolphins have been transitioning. They felt Adam Gase lost the locker room last year and turned to Brian Flores to guide their fortunes. They also moved on from quarterback Ryan Tannehill and have two QB's to choose from as they move forward. On Friday night they take on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in a game that is set to begin at 7:30 PM ET at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa.

There is this thing in the NFL that tells team owners that someone who has been around success will have that rub off on him. That's why you see a couple of Sean McVay's assistants already get gobbled up for head coaching jobs, and that's why Bill Belichick's assistants seem to get jobs as well. Notoriously they don't work out, since these assistants, after all, aren't Belichick.

Brian Flores is the latest attempt. He wasn't quite the defensive coordinator in New England, although he made the defensive calls. So let's see if he has the magic pill. Adam Gase had been brought in a few years ago is the possessor of the magic pill, since he had been associated with Peyton Manning in Denver, and the talk was how he would change the "culture" around the Dolphins. Well, they made the playoffs the first season, but by the time the 2018 season was drawing to a close, that "culture" had become pretty toxic. So it went from magic pill to bitter pill.

Tampa Bay Miami free pickWhen are people going to understand that maybe it's the guy who succeeds despite NOT being around the superstar player or coach that really rates a second and/or third look? Oh well.....

In the NFL betting odds on this game at BetAnySports, infused with reduced juice, the Bucs are the favorites:

Tampa Bay Buccaneers -3 (+100)
Miami Dolphins +3 (-110)

Over 42.5 points (-107)
Under 42.5 points (-103)

With Miami, the issue at quarterback is pretty simple - it's a duel between Josh Rosen and Ryan Fitzpatrick as to who the starter is going to be. Fitzpatrick was with the Bucs the last two seasons, and really put up some numbers when starting in place of a suspended Jameis Winston in the first three games, exceeding 400 yards in each of them.

Miami DolphinsSo you know that Fitzpatrick can move a team if he has to. And he's got enough experience in any kind of system, as he is with his eighth different NFL team.

But they would really like to see Rosen grow into the starting role. If you remember before last year's draft, a lot of scouts were talking about how he was the "most NFL-ready" quarterback available, and he was victimized by a terrible offensive line in Arizona last year. Apparently he was not a "generational talent" like Kyler Murray, according to Cardinals' GM Steve Keim, so they let him go after just a year.

Rosen led the team on three scoring drives of 60 yards or more in last week's 34-27 win over Atlanta, throwing for 191 yards. Flores wants to see him getting the offense in and out of the huddle faster and make quicker decisions. The "pitching order" should be the same on Friday night - Fitzpatrick will start, followed by Rosen, and then Jake Rudock. The total points from last week was unusual for a pre-season game. And the Bucs, playing a "down the field" offense with new head coach Bruce Arians, rang up 479 yards and 31 first downs in a 30-28 loss to Pittsburgh.

As long as we have competition in Miami, and veteran backups like Ryan Griffin (330 yards) and Blaine Gabbert on the Bucs' side, is there any reason to believe these teams couldn't combine to top this figure? We're okay in paying to find out.
