Can Cardale Jones and the DC Defenders stay hot? We'll see as they visit the Los Angeles Wildcats in an XFL games scheduled for early Sunday evening.

The DC Defenders look like a well-oiled machine, as they keep on humming. And Cardale Jones looks like a quarterback who may be earning himself a trip back to the NFL. But can the Los Angeles Wildcats do anything to stop him? We're going to find out as these two teams do battle at Dignity Health Sports Park (formerly known as the Home Depot Center and StubHub Center) at 6 PM ET on Sunday.

It will be televised on Fox Sports 1, and BetAnySports customers get a special treat. Not only can they get reduced juice before the game starts, they can also watch the game and place wagers in real-time, as they take advantage of what is available through Sports Betting Ultra.

The Wildcats made some moves after their disastrous Week 1 beating at the hands of the Houston Roughnecks. Obviously there must have been some ugly stuff going on behind the scenes, as defensive coordinator Pepper Johnson was fired after only one game, and Anthony Johnson, a linebacker who was presumably their best pass rusher and had been named captain on defense, wanted out and got his wish (with a trade).

So no one knew what to expect as they went out and played the Dallas Renegades last weekend. Well, for three quarters, they looked like a reformed defensive unit, keeping Landry Jones off-balance and holding Dallas without a touchdown. But then they fell vulnerable to the run game, specifically Cameron Artis-Payne, who ran for two fourth quarter TD's and 99 yards on the day, sending the Wildcats down to an eight-point loss.

Still, head coach Winston Moss, who had pulled the trigger on both Johnsons, thought his team took some steps forward. And they did. They put forth a real effort. Will we see some carry-over here?

In the XFL betting odds posted on this game by the folks at BetAnySports, the Defenders are a healthy favorite on the road:

DC Defenders -9.5
Los Angeles Wildcats +9.5

Over 46 points -110
Under 46 points -110

Thus far, no one has allowed more points than the Wildcats have (62). And here they face a guy who can make an argument for being the XFL's best quarterback. Cardale Jones, who won a national championship at Ohio State,. has thrown for 511 yards and has perhaps the deepest group of wide receivers in the XFL. One of those wideouts, Eli Rogers, actually played last week against New York while skipping his mother's funeral.

One must consider that the 'Cats will still be a bit short in the secondary. Cornerback Harlan Miller has a thigh injury and is expected to miss the game, while Jaylen Dunlap, who is the starter on the other corner, may play.

The Defenders' er, defenders, have been aided in the sense that they have so far faced Seattle and New York, two teams who were discombobulated, to say the least, on offense. The Dragons, have not had offensive coordinator Mike Riley due to "personal reasons," with a rather ineffective quarterback in Brandon Silvers, while the Guardians executed so badly last weekend that Matt McGloin called out his own coaching staff at halftime. He told an ESPN sideline reporter that “We need to change the whole entire game plan," and then after the game that, "There's a lot of stuff going on behind closed doors."

That kind of sounds like LA's defensive plight from Week 1. But last week there was a lot more life in the offense, as Josh Johnson returned and threw a couple of TD passes to Nelson Spruce, the former Ram who has now caught 17 passes in the first two weeks. The problem is, there was not a lot of production from elsewhere, and LA has not fashioned much of a running game. Johnson threw for 5.4 yards an attempt. So we're not sure what to conclude, although we DO acknowledge Johnson's experience.

Once Dallas found out they could push the Wildcats' defensive line back, they had much smoother sailing. And with 6.4 yards per attempt, they could make things easier for Landry Jones. DC could make it easier for the "other" Jones (Cardale) They have at least the possibility of a ground game with Donnell Pumphrey, who was a 2000-yard rusher at San Diego State and rebounded from a sluggish first week to have 52 yards on the ground against New York.

The DC wide receivers averaged 13.9 yards per reception and a little over ten yards per target last week. So they are not afraid to throw the ball down the field.

And if this venue didn't give the LA Chargers any "home field advantage," why would it do that for the Wildcats? Besides, Jones is the guy fans would be more familiar with, having been a member of the Chargers, while Johnson somehow missed that franchise in his tour around the NFL.

But this line has moved to the point where it doesn't seem to offer a lot of value. I'd much rather move with the total, which has moved as well but might not be so imposing if the Johnson-Spruce connection continues to develop. OVER
