The defending national champion UConn Huskies are laying points as they venture west to face the Gonzaga Bulldogs on Friday night.

The UConn Huskies rolled through the rest of the field in last year's NCAA Tournament en route to a title. This year they may not be as dominant, but they certainly are formidable.

And on Friday night they'll have another chance to show us how good they are as they take on the Gonzaga Bulldogs - the 'Zags, if you will - in a game that tips off at 10 PM ET at the Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle, where they hope to have an NBA team someday.

In the college basketball betting odds that have been posted on this game by the people at BetOnline, the Huskies are laying points:

UConn Huskies -4
Gonzaga Bulldogs +4

Over 153.5 points (-115)
Under 153.5 points (-105)

Gonzaga, from the West Coast Conference, comes into this game with a record of 8-2. They've got victories over USC and UCLA, and lost to the powerhouse Purdue Boilermakers. Last Saturday they suffered an upset loss at the hands of Washington but bounced back with an easy win over Mississippi Valley State (78-40).

UConn (9-1), which has beaten Indiana, Texas and North Carolina, has suffered just one defeat, and that was a 69-65 decision at the hands of Kansas at Allen Fieldhouse.

In that game, Tristen Newton had 31 points. The East Carolina transfer, who has developed into one of the nation's premier players, also posted 23 points in a winning cause against Indiana.

Connecticut can truly play an inside-outside game. They have a shot-blocker to worry about in 7'2" Donovan Clingan. Cam Spencer, who played at Loyola (MD) and Rutgers before this stop, is 45.6% from beyond the three-point arc. On an overall basis, the Huskies are not all that sensational from long-range (just 33.6%), although they do take 43.4% of their shots from out there.

There are two things to keep in mind about UConn, however. One is that they do a great job of creating second chances, as their offensive rebounding rate of nearly 40% is seventh-best in the country. They are also the nation's best when shooting inside the arc (i.e., two-point range) at 64.2%.

Gonzaga also does a good job of hitting the offensive glass, and they have Wyoming transfer Graham Ike (6'9", 250 lbs.) to counter UConn's size. Take note, though, that there is no inside scoring artist like Drew Timme on the Gonzaga roster anymore.

This team does not depend on three-pointers; the 'Zags made only five triples and pulled down only nine offensive rebounds against Washington, and thus they were not able to effectively attack the matchup zone the "other" Huskies employ. Connecticut has had a tough time defending at the arc (just 325th in the country), but Mark Few's team may not have a whole lot to exploit it with what they have.

And only a handful of teams are in the same league with UConn when it comes to thwarting the two-point shot (40.7%). So unless Gonzaga can consistently run the floor and establish the fast break, they'll be limited in what they can do offensively.

This points us toward UConn as our choice on Friday night.
